Access data on your Network Home Folder during the transition to OneDrive
As we begin to transition our community from using network home folders located on servers on campus to using OneDrive, we need to disable a feature called Windows Folder Redirection, that is currently enabled on most lab, classroom, faculty and staff Windows computers.
That feature redirects the local desktop and documents folders for each user of the computer back to their network home folder on our servers, but it complicates the move of data to OneDrive.
Starting with some of our public labs, we will disable that feature, which may make it appear as though your data has disappeared on those computers.
The data is not actually deleted and you can use the following steps to directly access your data:
- Right-Click on the start menu and select for File Explorer
- In the File Explorer, select This PC from the left navigation pane, and then select the H: network home folder
- Within that folder, you should be able to get to your Desktop, Documents and any other data you might have saved within the network home folder.
Note: If you are working with any new files on the computer, be sure that you are saving them within your network home folder to make sure they will be accessible from other computers. Files saved to the local Desktop or Documents folders on computers that with Folder Redirection disabled are only accessible on that one computer, and are not backed up in the event that there is a problem with that computer.
