Can't open Outlook 2016 for Windows due to pending update
Problem
When opening Outlook for Windows, the following error appears:
"Outlook requires updates before it can start. Click Learn more for update instructions."
Environment
- Windows computers with Microsoft Office 2016 installed
Solution
The computer most likely has Microsoft Office 2016 (which includes Outlook 2016). Microsoft ended mainstream support for Microsoft Office 2016 on October 13th 2020.
Thus, ITS recommends the removal of Microsoft Office 2016 and the installation of Microsoft Office 365.
To do so:
- Remove Microsoft Office 2016:
- In the Windows Search, type 'Programs'. Click on 'Add or Remove Programs' in the search results.
- In the window that opens, scroll down and click on Microsoft Office 2016 (any version of Office 2016). Click 'Uninstall'.
- Confirm the Uninstall.
- Confirm the removal of Microsoft Office 2016 in the proceeding windows.
- Close the removal window for Microsoft Office 2016.
- Use the instructions at the following address to download and install the latest version of Microsoft Office 365 using your Pomona College account:
https://servicedesk.pomona.edu/a/solutions/articles/18000021109
- Launch Outlook 365. Your mail will need some time to re-synchronize with Outlook 365, which may take 10 minutes to a couple of hours to complete (depending on the amount of email in your account and the speed of your connection).
