ArcGIS StoryMaps - Sharing a StoryMap
Sharing an ArcGIS StoryMap
ArcGIS StoryMaps is a story authoring web-based application that enables you to share your maps in the context of narrative text and other multimedia content.
If you experience issues with ArcGIS StoryMaps, you may refer to the additional documentation or contact the ITS help desk at 909-621-8061 or servicedesk@pomona.edu.
When on the projects page, users will select “New Story.” In the drop-down menu that appears, users select how you would like to begin. Users can start from scratch or start with some simple starting templates. These includes a “Sidecar” template which has a scrolling narrative panel, a “Guided map tour” template that allows you to walk your audience through a list of sequential locations, and an “Explorer map tour” where readers explore a curated set of places in whatever order they choose.
Previewing your StoryMap
- In the projects page that appears when you first open ArcGIS StoryMap, find the storymap you are interested in publishing.
- At this point, you can preview your story map by selecting "Preview" in the top menu. You can also print your preview by clicking on the three dots in the lower right-hand corner and then selecting "Preview."
Publishing your StoryMap
To actually publish your story map, you’ll need to select your desired story map from your projects page. When ready, select “Publish” in the top menu that appears. At this point, a drop-down menu will appear.
- From the “Publish” drop-down menu, you can set your sharing level to one of the three choices provided. You can set it to “private,” meaning only you can view your story map. You can set it to “my organization,” so that only people in your organization can view your story map. Of course, you can also set it to “everyone,” or public.
- From the “Publish” menu, you can set group sharing. This would allow you to share your story map with a specific group to allow other members to view it. If the group has update capabilities other members can also edit your stop and publish changes. You would use the search field that appears to find any groups.
- When ready, select “Publish.”
Sharing your StoryMap
Once you share your story map, you’ll have a few different options for dispersing your story map, depending on which sharing level you select.
If you select “private,” you won’t have any sharing options. If you select “my organization” no direct sharing options will appear after you publish your story.
If you select “Everyone,” you will have several direct sharing options. If you click on the three dots in the top menu, you can click “Embed this story” to get an embed code that can be inputted into another website. You can also select the upload icon in the top menu to either copy a link to your story map, share your story map to Facebook, share your story map to Twitter, or share your story map to LinkedIn. Of course, you may have to sign into your social media accounts and fill out any other necessary information.
Changing your Publishing Settings
You may decide you want to select a different sharing level after publishing your story map. To edit this aspect of your story map, select the three dots in the top menu and click “Edit Story.” You can then change the sharing levels as instructed before or make any other necessary changes.
Collections
Users have the option to assemble collections to showcase their work, assemble a suite of content on a particular theme, or serve as a base for recurring content. To get started with building a collection, follow these steps:
- In your projects page, click on the Collections tab
- Select the “New Collection” button
- The collection builder will open. On the front page, you can add a title and description.
- Select “Add to collection” to begin adding content to your collection.
- In the “Add to collection” window that appears you can search for your content in various ways. The first tab is the “ArcGIS” tab that takes you to a list of content you've published. Select the Content button to access more options from the drop-down menu that appears. If you’ve published any story maps before, they will appear under “Stories." You can also access any created “Apps” from this drop-down menu or add any previously added “Files."
- You can also search for content by looking in the “My Favorites,” “My Groups,” “My Organization,” and “Living Atlas” tabs at the top.
- Once you’ve added the desired content, you can edit the design of your collections page by clicking on “Design” in the top menu. As before, here you can change the layout, navigation, theme, and logo.
- To add a thumbnail to your content piece, hover over it and select the gear icon. From here you can upload a thumbnail image and title your content piece. Click “Save” when ready.
- To preview your collection, simply click “Preview,” up at the top menu.
- To share your newly made collection, click “Publish” up at the top. From the “Publish” drop-down menu, you can set your sharing level to one of the three choices provided. You can set it to “private,” meaning only you can view your collection. You can set it to “my organization,” so that only people in your organization can view your collection. Of course, you can also set it to “everyone,” or public.
- From the “Publish” drop-down menu, you can also set group sharing. This would allow you to share your collection with a specific group to allow other members to view it. If the group has update capabilities other members can also edit your stop and publish changes. You would use the search field that appears to find any groups.
- When ready, select “Publish collection.”
- Once you publish your collection, the page will refresh. If your sharing level was “everyone,” you’ll be able to access an embed code by clicking on the three-dot menu at the top and then “Embed this collection.”
- Finally, the three dots at the top allows you to add your collection to your favorites, duplicate your collection, or delete your collection.
