Install Scalar on your website (publishing for Domain of One's Own)
Scalar is a free, open-source authoring and publishing platform that's designed to make it easy for authors to write long-form, born-digital scholarship online. Scalar enables users to assemble media from multiple sources and juxtapose them with their own writing in a variety of ways, with minimal technical expertise required.
More fundamentally, Scalar is a semantic web authoring tool that brings a considered balance between standardization and structural flexibility to all kinds of material. It includes a built-in reading interface as well as an API that enables Scalar content to be used to drive custom-designed applications. If you're dealing with small to moderate amounts of structured content and need a lightweight platform that encourages improvisation with your data model, Scalar may be the right solution for you.

The instructions below will show one how to install WordPress on one's Domain of One's Own site:
- Log into http://sites.pomona.edu with your Pomona College credentials (upper right corner).
- Click on 'Dashboard'.
- Scroll down to Applications. Click the 'Scalar' button.
- Click on '+ install this application'.
- Fill in the different fields accordingly.
- Select the domain or sub-domain where you’d like your Scalar site to live. You can create a sub-domain by following the directions in the section Setting up Subdomain. The directory is optional. If you are using a sub-domain, you may not need to use a sub-directory. You can learn more by reading Subdomains vs Subdirectories.
- Under Version, select the version that is most recent (recommended).
- By default, the installer will automatically back up your website and update it anytime a new version comes out. While we recommend you keep this option, it is possible to only do minor updates or turn them off completely.
- The installer will also create a database for you automatically. But, if you’ve already created one for this website, you can choose Let me manage the database settings and enter the details.
- You will need to create a username and password for the Scalar install. A password can be generated for you, but you should try to create your own.
- Scroll to the bottom and click Install.
- Once the installation is finished, you will be taken to the list of installed plug-ins for your website (Installatron).
Here you’ll find links to log in to your Scalar portal.
- Log into your new Scalar portal with the credentials you set during the installation process.
You are now ready to publish content.
